Like the Jews, the Serbs have gone through grave persecution and destruction, Jeremic said. The Serbian foreign minister's grandfather was a survivor of the Mauthausen and Dachau concentration camps, and Yugoslavia was one of the first countries to recognize Israel, Haaretz reminded. The paper said that Jeremic presented a series of claims that are also accepted by Israel's diplomatic and academic circles and which warn about the possible consequences to Israel if the world were to recognize the independence of Kosovo. According to Haaretz, Jeremic is opposed to the idea that political and territorial conflicts can be resolved by imposed outside solutions which are not accepted by the conflicting sides, while some in Israel believe that if Jerusalem does not opt for such a viewpoint, Israel too can experience the imposition of an agreement with the Palestinians, while the Israeli Arabs in Galilee could get more active international support for breaking away from Israel. There are more than a million ethnic Arabs inside today's Israeli borders. Jeremic also said that the two problems "clearly reflect the West's discriminatory policies," adding that all Belgrade is asking is that the international community adopts the same approach to the Kosovo problem as to the Israeli - Palestinian issue, Haaretz reminded.
