U.S. and some EU countries are determined to grant independence to Kosovo at any cost, Sergei Lavrov says. The U.S. and several EU countries are considering this option even if it means a violation of international law, and this is where no similarities can be found with the Russian position, the Russian foreign minister said this Wednesday. Lavrov: Russian, Western positions far apart "Our Western partners, above all the United States and a couple of European countries, are resolute in giving Kosovo independence, cost what it may, even if it means a violation of international law," Lavrov said in an interview for the Moscow daily Vremya Novostei. "This is why it is impossible for us to have similar positions," he stressed. "There can be no unilateral solutions either for Kosovo, for Iran, Lebanon or for the Middle East issue as a whole," the chief of Russian diplomacy said, adding that it was not by chance that that the UN Charter included the principle of unanimity of the UN Security Council permanent members in making decisions and passing resolutions. Lavrov earlier announced that Russia would veto any UN resolution proposing recognition of Kosovo's unilaterally declared independence, the newspaper said. Sergei Lavrov (Tanjug)
