The future of the west Balkans lies in the EU, but it won't happen without a compromise over Kosovo, says Vuk Jeremic. “Serbia will, just like any other sovereign and democratic state, do everything in keeping with international law to prevent a unilateral declaration of independence in Kosovo,“ the foreign minister said in London today. Jeremic calls for negotiated solution "Serbia will not fight, it will not contribute to destabilization in the Balkans, but it will use absolutely everything from its political, diplomatic, economic and legal arsenal, to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity," Jeremic told Tanjug. During his meeting with British counterpart David Miliband, Jeremic conveyed Belgrade's firm stand that a compromise over Kosovo’s future status was possible through resumed consultations under the auspices of the UN after December 10. "I expressed our readiness to continue the dialogue and our confidence that a fair dialogue could lead to a compromise solution for Kosovo’s future status," said Jeremic. Besides Kosovo, the two foreign ministers discussed the region’s European future. “Britain understands this very well,“ said Jeremic. “It is one of the countries that actively supports a European future and full integration for all the Balkan countries within the EU,“ he added. Jeremic and Miliband agreed that the current problems relating to Kosovo must not be allowed to hamper or halt European processes. Vuk Jeremic (FoNet, archive)
