Parliament adopts presidential elections law

The parliament has paved the way for the presidential vote to be held in Serbia. The Law on Serbian Presidential Elections passed in parliament this Monday, stipulating that the speaker will call and schedule the date of presidential elections, according to a law adopted today. Under the law, a minimum 30 and a maximum 60 days must pass from the date of calling until the date of elections, which must not be a workday. The president will be elected to a five-year term in office, on the basis of general and equal election rights, in a free and direct ballot, by secret and individual votes. All Serbian citizen over the age of 18 and with a place of residence will have the right to vote and be elected to this office. In case of a state of emergency or state of war, elections will be called after a maximum of three months after the end of the declaration of the state of war, and must be held within three months after the expiry of president's term of office. A total of 137 MPs voted in favor, seven against, while 19 abstained.

Under the law, a minimum 30 and a maximum 60 days must pass from the date of calling until the date of elections, which must not be a workday.

All Serbian citizen over the age of 18 and with a place of residence will have the right to vote and be elected to this office.
