Serbia is offering Kosovo autonomy that would be wider than that enjoyed by Catalonia and the Basque country. Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic said in an interview for Spanish daily El Pais that Belgrade had “offered 95 percent of possible powers“ to the local authorities in Kosovo. "Kosovo to enjoy greater autonomy than Catalonia" “Apart from foreign policy and defense, everything else would be under the jurisdiction of the Kosovo authorities. From a diplomatic point of view, we’re even prepared to allow Kosovo to have its own seat in certain international bodies, excluding, of course, the UN,“ said Jeremic, who was taking part in an OSCE summit in Madrid. He made it clear that “Serbia cannot accept Kosovo independence, as that would entail ethnic segregation in a sovereign country.“ “And, as that has to be understood, we have to retain Serbia’s territorial integrity,“ stressed Jeremic, who, according to the Madrid daily, “accused the Albanian side of making excessive demands.“ The foreign minister called on the international community, above all the U.S. and the EU, to “realize that Kosovo sovereignty would set a dangerous precedent for contravening international law.“ “I hope the EU will act unitedly, and bear in mind the consequences of Kosovo independence for Europe,“ he said. Jeremic added that he was certain that “Spain understands the danger of such ethnic secessionism that jeopardizes a country’s sovereignty.“ Asked what steps the Serbian government would take in the event of a unilateral Kosovo declaration of independence, the foreign minister replied that “Serbia is using all political, economic and diplomatic measures at its disposal to prevent such a breakaway.“ “I don’t think the world believes that we’ll just sit here with our arms crossed and accept an illegal decision. In any case, for that independence to receive international recognition, it must be approved by the UN Security Council,” he pointed out. Jeremic said that Serbia, “before even reaching such a situation, would do everything in its powers to avert this, as Serbia was a European and democratic country.“ Vuk Jeremic (FoNet, archive)
