Vojislav Kostunica says the region's stability depends on the U.S.’s readiness to observe Resolution 1244. Alternatively, Washington will decide in favor of a most brutal violation of the resolution and the UN Charter, the prime minister said Friday. Kostunica: Stability, peace in region depend on U.S. "If the U.S. said it would observe Resolution 1244 and its crucial provisions on the guarantee of Serbia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, while ensuring the essential autonomy of the Albanian ethnic minority in the province, it would, beyond any doubt, be possible to reach a negotiated solution that would satisfy the basic interests of both Serbia and the Kosovo Albanians," the prime minister told Tanjug in an interview. Kostunica underlined that at the moment, "it is obvious that all responsibility lies with America and its choice between law and stability, on the one hand, and lawlessness and long-lasting instability, on the other.” "One cannot build peace and stability in the Balkans by pursuing a policy of force, illegal violence and lawlessness," Kostunica said. He underlined that Serbia would do everything in its power, via the Security Council and in keeping with the UN Charter and the Serbian Constitution, to reach a negotiated solution, and preserve stability and peace in the region. "This, of course, means that there is no way that a EU mission can be set up to replace UNMIK (in Kosovo) in direct contravention of Resolution 1244," Kostunica underlined. Vojislav Kostunica
