The European Union Council of Ministers met in Brussels Monday with Kosovo on the agenda. The EU strongly supports an agreement on the status of the province, but it will face the necessity of making political decisions if an agreement is not reached by December 10, EU officials said in Brussels, Beta reports. EU on Kosovo: Decisions even without agreement Portuguese Foreign Minister Luis Amado, who chairs the EU Council of Ministers, and EU High Representative Javier Solana, announced at the conclusion of the EU foreign ministers' session that the EU would soon discuss sending an EU mission to Kosovo with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. "What will happen after December 10 should not be dramatized. The world will not stand still if the Belgrade-Pristina talks under the aegis of the troika do not yield results," Amado said at the conclusion of the session. Solana said "life will not stop" if no agreement is reached through negotiations on the status of Kosovo. Asked if a solution for Kosovo's status could be found without a new UN Security Council resolution, he stressed that the EU would prefer such a resolution. But, if no agreement is achieved, the process should go on and be assisted with the support of a EU mission. This should be done in accordance with international law, Solana said. "The Council welcomed the fact that elections in Kosovo took place in an orderly and peaceful manner but expressed its disappointment at the low overall voter turnout," was one of the official conclusions of the meeting. "It regretted the low participation by the Kosovo Serb community and Belgrade's call for a boycott and stressed the importance of the inclusion of all communities in political life in Kosovo," the conclusions said further. "The Council looked forward to an early formation of a new government to strengthen the reform agenda to the benefit of all communities in Kosovo," it was added. The Council was briefed by Wolfgang Ischinger, the EU representative in the troika facilitating the negotiations between Belgrade and Pristina on the future status of Kosovo, on the status of the negotiating process. "The Council reiterated the necessity of rapidly finding a solution to the Kosovo status issue. The Council confirmed that the EU stands ready to play a significant role in Kosovo in the future and is preparing accordingly."
