Irish Foreign Minister Dermot Ahern was in Pristina Friday for meetings with local and international officials. After meeting Kosovo President Fatmir Sejdiu, Ahern said he "expects the EU to be united" over a decision on Kosovo status, it is likely to take after December 10. Sejdiu said that Pristina is "ready to take adequate measures after December 10 in coordination with the international community." Ahern also conferred Friday with President of the Democratic Party of Kosovo Hashim Thaci on status and forthcoming elections in Kosovo. Late on Thursday, he met with UNMIK chief Joachim Ruecker and leader of the Serb List for Kosovo-Metohija Oliver Ivanovic. Earlier yesterday, the chief of Irish diplomacy was in Belgrade for meetings with Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica and President Boris Tadic. Kostunica said afterwards that Belgrade's proposal of a Hong Kong style model for Kosovo represented "a significant step toward finding a compromise, sustainable and functional solution to Kosovo's status." According to a statement, Ahern said it is important that the two sides find a compromise solution for Kosovo through dialogue, and that "this dialogue should not be constrained by deadlines." He also added that it is important to aim for the best solution, which would guarantee stability. Ahern said that relations between Serbia and Ireland are good, while possibilities exist for further economic cooperation. Ahern also met with Tadic and discussed bilateral relations, European integration of Serbia and Kosovo's future status, Tadic's office stated, Beta news agency reported. The president once again emphasized that Serbia's strategic goal is European Union membership, while Ahern reiterated that Ireland fully supports this goal.
