U.S. and French Presidents George Bush and Nicolas Sarkozy discussed Kosovo during their last meeting. Bush and Sarkozy, meeting in Virginia, stated that Kosovo had been discussed, though they did not go into any details. Bush, Sarkozy discuss Kosovo “We dedicated a good amount of time to Kosovo and I thank the president for taking the initiative in solving the Kosovo problem,” Sarkozy said after his meeting with Bush last night. Bush, who did not mention Kosovo during the joint press conference, has stated several times in recent months that the U.S. expects Kosovo independence sooner or later. Since Sarkozy took office, France has taken a similar stance, though earlier their view was more in line with that of Russia, who favor a compromise without violating international law or Serbia’s sovereignty. U.S. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said that the U.S. was working very closely with all parties involved in order to resolve the Kosovo crisis in the near future. In response to Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica’s statement that the international mediating Troika’s 14-point plan was “completely unacceptable,” McCormack said that the U.S. stance was clear, and that there was a confirmed plan “based on the Ahtisaari proposal.” “We are working very closely with all parties, with the Europeans, Russians and everyone else in the region, in order to bring matters to a close. But our end result, as the president has said, is that this must be dealt with in the near future and we are working towards that,” McCormack said.
