Some analysts predict Serbia could be heading for a new period of isolation. The warnings come after four western countries submitted demarches to Serbia concerning the Bosnian dispute, and there is now a fear that by distancing itself from the international community the country could returning to isolation once more. Bosnian crisis to lead to Serbia isolation? Member of the Foreign Policy Council Dusan Lazic told B92 that the actions of certain western countries following the going-ons in Bosnia-Hercegovina were particularly significant, given the identity of the countries concerned. “The demarche means that Serbia is entering a sort of confrontation with the international community once again, and the consequences could lead to renewed isolation. We’re sending the world messages on the basis of which they could conclude that we’re following a path similar to that of the regime, policies and conduct of Slobodan Milosevic." The U.S., the UK, France, Germany and Italy have, via their embassies in Serbia, handed the government a demarche over the positions assumed by Serbian officials following the efforts of the Bosnian High Representative Miroslav Lajcak to make changes to the country’s constitution. Lazic explains that such a reaction on the part of the international community’s leading countries could significantly hamper Serbia’s hopes in the Kosovo status talks, adding that a response from the Foreign Ministry was expected, though the worst that could happen now would be for “Belgrade to pour oil on to the fire.“ “I think it should be a constructive approach, that they should explain to those countries our problems, our take on matters, our concern over the issue of Kosovo, and not just Kosovo, but the whole region, with other countries, particularly bearing in mind that under the Dayton Accords, we are entitled to establish a special parallel relationship,“ he said. Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic has not officially reacted to the demarche, but has announced “Serbia’s determination to respect the Dayton Accords and all its elements, which are a guarantee of the equality of the two entities, and all three peoples within Bosnia-Hercegovina.“
