A Kosovo Albanian leader has chosen Christmas as the benchmark for the declaration of the province's independence. "Our deputies in the Kosovo Assembly will seek to have a date before Christmas this year set for the proclamation of independence, as well as to inform the international community about this," Ora leader Veton Surroi told a session of the Trilateral Commission held in Vienna Saturday, according to Pristina media reports. Surroi: Independence before Christmas Surroi also added that Kosovo now needs "a functional state." "We have arrived at a point where we are tired of negotiating and need to make decisions," he said. "We've been engaged in talks and we see clearly that it would have been better to have arrived at a solution through negotiations, but we cannot stay hostage to such a formula forever," Surroi was quoted as saying. The Vienna meeting was also attended by the EU envoy to the Contact Group Troika, Wolfgang Ischinger, former Serbian foreign minister, now Stability Pact for Southeastern Europe official Goran Svilanovic, and journalist and Balkan analyst Tim Judah.
