UNMIK's Deputy Chief Steven Schook spoke last night about Kosovo at a NATO Assembly seminar in Belgrade. Schook said the Kosovo solution would leave “some groups happy, some unhappy, while others will try to undermine the decision.” UNMIK: Status settlement needed as soon as possible “In Kosovo and Serbia however, there are institutions that can guarantee stability. We expect Belgrade to play a role and not allow stability in Kosovo to be undermined,” he said. “My guess is that what applied two years ago, when the report was submitted to the UN Secretary General, still applies today. The current situation in Kosovo cannot last much longer. UNMIK’s eight-year film, particularly if you consider the situation after the crisis, all those people that had to be fed, assuring security and establishment of institutions, is not such a bad film. “I think its a great success on the part of the UN to carry out such a project. But, there are scenes in that film that need to be worked on. The most important thing is that it’s impossible to work on the majority of them until status has been settled,” said Schook. In his opinion, that particularly applies to problems such as unemployment and economic development, and that is the reason why it has to be clear which direction Kosovo is heading in after December 10.
