A Vojvodina official believes that the Spanish model of asymmetric decentralization would be good for Serbia. “I believe that the Spanish model of asymmetric decentralization would be very good and would significantly help the democratization of our country and provide a more effective and functional state administration,” Vojvodina Assembly speaker Bojan Kostres said at a conference dedicated to regionalization, held in Valencia. “Apply Spanish model to Serbia” Kostres said earlier that if a similar model was applied to Serbia, Kosovo could have a similar status to that of the Basque country, while Vojvodina would have autonomous status similar to Catalonia. According to his cabinet, Kostres said that the experiences of European countries in the process of regionalization and decentralization were very important, because they could help in finding the model that best corresponded to the citizens of Serbia. He said at the conference that he was very happy to be, for the first time, a member of the Serbian delegation. “I am encouraged by the fact that several government ministers, such as the Public Administration and Local Self-Government Minister Milan Markovic, who is leading our delegation in Valencia, have accepted the important role Vojvodina has to play in Serbia’s European integration process,” Kostres said. The central theme of the conference, organized by the Spanish government with the support of the Council of Europe, is “Good Local and Regional Government – a European Challenge.”
