The head of the EU negotiating team with Serbia says the EU will soon be ready to initial the SAA. Pierre Mirel expressed the hope that the Hague Chief Prosecutor Carla del Ponte’s report, as well as EU Commissioner Olli Rehn’s final assessment, would be favorable for Serbia, allowing initialing of the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) to take place at the end of October. "Serbian SAA initialing imminent" “Serbia will move closer to the EU quicker because of her capacities and capabilities, not because of short-cuts and relaxations, none of which there will be,” Mirel tells tomorrow's edition of daily Novosti. He said that Brussels needed another two to three weeks to finish the technical part of the work in the Council of Europe in order for the SAA to be initialed at the end of October. Asked whether the EU could suspend the SAA for Serbian failure to cooperate with the Hague Tribunal, Mirel replied that the subject had not been broached within the union. “I believe the SAA is an expression of mutual trust and that Serbia will respect the agreement, as well as apply it. I believe Serbia, as a serious nation, will respect what it has signed and committed itself to,” he said. On Monday, Del Ponte will submit her report on Serbian cooperation with the Hague to EU foreign ministers at a meeting in Luxembourg, which Serbian initialing of the SAA will directly depend on. “We hope that Del Ponte’s report on Monday will be good for Serbia. Likewise the assessment of Olli Rehn, who will make the final decision,” concluded Mirel.
