Slovenia's Foreign Minister wants the same criteria used for Serbian EU membership, as applied to Croatia. During a meeting today in Ljubljana with representatives of the European Parliament’s Foreign Policy Unit, Dimitrij Rupel called for Serbia to be set the same criteria for EU membership as those set for Croatia, though he added that a further condition should be full cooperation with the Hague Tribunal. Rupel: Same EU rules for Serbia, Croatia The aim of the meeting was to present Slovenia’s foreign policy priorities for her forthcoming six-month presidency of the EU. Rupel reiterated that Slovenia, from January 1 of next year, would devote special attention to the situation in the west Balkans, as part of which the country would advocate a European future for the states in the region and the need to revitalise the process of their integration within the EU. That’s why Slovenia, in March during her presidency, will organize an informal meeting of EU ministers, where the foreign ministers of the countries in the region will also be invited. As far as Kosovo is concerned, Rupel underlined the importance of EU unity in resolving the issue, which is a European issue and should be resolved from a European perspective. Furthermore, during her presidency, Slovenia will argue for further visa relaxations for citizens of all the countries within the region. Despite the fact that Slovenia will address vital issues directly relevant to Serbia’s domestic and foreign policy, Serbia is still without an ambassador in Ljubljana.
