The local self-government minister has spoken with MPs and Presevo local authority representatives Monday. Milan Markovic, from the Democratic Party (DS), announced that his ministry would give RSD 3mn (EUR 36,800) to finance the building of a green market in Serbia's volatile south. Minister promises help for south In Presevo, he spoke to lawmaker in the Serbian parliament, Riza Halimi, Municipal President Ragmi Mustafa, and to local political leaders. Markovic said that "good will and readiness" existed for cooperation between the ministry and local authorities. Mustafa said he expected this relationship to function much better and stressed that this was the first visit to Presevo by a minister from the new cabinet. The minister reiterated that the model adopted for the local elections will be very important and that they would be "meaningless if they continued to come across as party one-upmanship." "Citizens have the right to know who they are voting for, and I am in favor of a candidate’s name and surname appearing on the ballot paper, and for citizens voting for someone they know," Markovic added. Parties represeted in the government are yet to decide whether to adopt majority or proportional electoral system for the upcoming local elections.
