Russia favors continued Kosovo talks

He added “independent international mediators” were needed to assist that process.

Interfax reports that Lavrov described yesterday’s statement from Martti Ahtisaari about the lowering of Russia’s status in the United Nations as “inappropriate”.

“Such statements lower someone else’s status, but not Russia’s’” he told reporters.

“The status of Ahtisaari is defined by his mandate as a special envoy, and it envisages the preparation of a number of proposals. If one of the sides cannot accept these proposals, the negotiations should be continued,” Lavrov said.

Meanwhile, Retuers quoted Interfax that reported Deputy Foreign Minister Vladimir Titov as saying Russia saw no point in joining discussions about a new resolution on Kosovo in the United Nations unless the draft is radically changed.

"Without changes on questions which are of fundamental importance for us, which we have already explained to our partners, we see no necessity to take part in a cosmetic editing (of the draft resolution)," Titov said.

Lavrov on Thursday attacked the new draft, saying that, behind diplomatic niceties, it amounted to the same plan to grant Kosovo independence that Russia has consistently opposed.
