“Likewise, new status of Kosovo should not exclude Serbia, which means that the process of regulating its status must run parallel with the process of Serbia’s Euro-Atlantic integration as an expression of EU’s support,” Rupel said.Slovenia is to assume the six-month rotating presidency over the European Union on January 1, 2008.
During his London visit, the Slovenian foreign minister said that EU’s task was to stabilize the region and embrace southeast European states, including Albania, Bosnia, Croatia, Montenegro, Macedonia, and Serbia together with Kosovo.
He also stressed the importance of Serbia in regards to stability in the Balkans, adding that the new government in Belgrade demonstrated determination to cooperate with the Hague Tribunal.
“Serbia will also have to try and sign the Stabilization and Association Agreement by the end of 2007,” Rupel said.
He also said that Serbia was facing a challenge in terms of Kosovo’s status issue.
Rupel reminded that the new government would be put to the test in the upcoming local and presidential elections that might coincide with the deadline for adopting a resolution based on Ahtisaari’s plan.
Rupel also said he was satisfied that Kosovo prime minister Agim Ceku dicarded the possibility of making any unilateral moves this year.
