Ponoš: Army will follow orders

“The state holds the monopoly over the use of force, particularly the military force. The Army in that sense has no right to have a separate agenda. Besides, those entrusted with weapons have to be able to channel their emotions,” Ponoš said.

Asked what would happen with Army’s membership in the Partnership for Peace (PfP) Program in case the Serbian authorities cut off ties with states that recognize Kosovo’s independence, Ponoš replied that the Army deemed relevant only the decisions passed by the Parliament, Government and the president.

As for the search for the remaining Hague fugitives, he confirmed that military police was checking all military facilities throughout Serbia on the defense ministry’s orders.

“We have not found any traces so far to suggest that any Hague indictee might be hiding in military structures,” Ponoš stressed.

Speaking of the Army’s cooperation with NATO and Russia, he said that these options were not mutually exclusive: “The state itself has decided to enter the Partnership for Peace Program, so the Army looks to explore all possibilities it offers. Russia is also one of the Program’s signatories, which is why I see no reasons to choose sides between NATO and Russia,” Ponoš concluded.
