“Cutting ties with NATO damaging”

“I believe it would be wrong to pass any decision that will bring nothing but damage to us,” he stressed, adding that the ministry of defense was an instrument of foreign policy, while NATO is one of the most powerful international organizations.

Šutanovac said that he wanted his ministry to be a “bridge of reconciliation” in a situation when political decisions Serbia might not approve could be made.

Commenting on the security situation in southern Serbia, Šutanovac said that the region’s security was jeopardized owing to poor economic situation.

“Ignoring the fact that Serbia, and former Yugoslavia for that matter, had an unbalanced development, and that some people suffered because of that, made it possible for false patriotism, nationalism and chauvinism to thrive among people in despair. In such surroundings one tends to lay the blame on someone else for his own misfortune,” Šutanovac said.
