“If the EU had a say, there would be no voting on this resolution. Many European countries and members of the UN Security Council understand that bullying Kosovo into independence would open up a door with tragic consequences on these territories,” Simić told daily Večernje novosti.

He noted that countries that are against the vote include Spain, Slovakia, Romania and Greece, while Italy and Poland are against any destabilization or degredation of Serbia.

“The paradox is that the EU always repeats that it wished to have Serbia in its ranks, but  [Brussels] supports it being stepped on and demeaned. That is completely unbelievable,” Simić said.

Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremić told B92, after meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, that he was very pleased with the discussions in Moscow.

Jeremić said that Serbia and Russia have almost identical stances as far as the Kosovo status situation is concerned, which is, that Ahtisaari’s plan is not acceptable, nor is an imposed solution without a compromise or agreement.

Intense consultations underway

EU Foreign Policy Chief Javier Solana’s Kosovo representative, Tobjorn Solstrom, said that European diplomats are in intense consultations with international partners in order to find a solution that will enable the UN Security Council to pass a resolution for Kosovo based on UN envoy Martti Ahtisaari’s plan.

“These are intensive consultations and I will not speculate about a time period,” Solstrom said.

He met with Kosovo officials to discuss the new symbols of the province, which will take effect after the status decision.

“Ahtisaari’s proposal calls for Kosovo to have its own symbols. The Kosovo negotiation team decided to continue working on this, and we see no problems with it. We believe that the final decision will be in accordance with Ahtisaari’s decision,” Solstrom said.
