More than 500 bombing sorties were made against Belgrade in three waves coming from Romania, killing more than 17,500 civilians.Representatives of the Serbian Ministry of Labor and the City of Belgrade placed wreaths on the Kosančićev Venac, at the point where Nazi aircrafts razed the National Library of Serbia to the ground.
As many as 300,000 books, photos, maps and other valuables were destroyed at the time.
Belgrade City deputy mayor Radmila Hrustanović placed wreaths on the commemorative plaque in the Karađorđe Park and in the Lane of the Victims at Belgrade cemetery.
