“Imposed solution won't pass Security Council”

“We notice that the number of such statements is increasing. Their tone, unfortunately, resembles shouting more and more. That worries us; I have to say this openly. Instead of looking for solutions, [they’re] looking for someone to blame."

" We believe that is the wrong way. Russia does consider itself responsible for the situation created in the region, and for this reason precisely ours is a responsible position, and we are ready to work patiently and constructively to reach an acceptable solution for Kosovo. As for these attempts to relay responsibility for possible negative developments, we consider that unacceptable and believe that such statements can only serve to further complicate the situation,” Alexeyev said.

The Russian ambassador reiterated his country’s position supporting only a solution acceptable to both sides in the Kosovo problem.

“There have been many attempts to speculate on whether or not Russia will use its veto powers. I am convinced that using a veto cannot be the goal of any country’s foreign policy, Russia included. Therefore, we propose avoiding a situation where someone might reach for the veto. That is why we advocate continued talks."

"However, in case there is any attempt to impose a solution unacceptable either to Belgrade or Priština, we will not allow such a solution to pass the Security Council. Foreign minister Sergei Lavrov confirmed this yesterday in his address to the Russian Duma. I believe no one should harbor any illusions on the subject,” Alexeyev told B92.

Alexeyev also said that possible unilateral recognitions of Kosovo’s independence would cause “chaos”, pushing the region back to a state of the so-called frozen conflict.
