Fried in Belgrade today

Towards the end of his visit to Belgrade, Fried will deliver a lecture at the City of Belgrade Assembly entitled “Serbia and the U.S.: Partnership Possibilities in the 21st Century”.

During his trip to the region, Fried will also visit Priština and Skopje. The Assistant State Secretary had said ahead of his journey that there was no ideal and risk-free solution for Kosovo, voicing confidence that UN special Kosovo envoy Martti Ahtisaari would “definitely come up with the best possible proposal for Kosovo backed by the U.S. in the UN Security Council”.

Daniel Fried was last seen in Belgrade and Priština in September 2006 when he also met with the state officials and delivered Washington’s position regarding Kosovo. “We believe that Kosovo is a unique case which would not set a precedent or apply elsewhere in the world”, Fried said at the time.

On the same occasion Fried said that Serbia enjoyed the U.S. support on the path toward the EU, asserting it must achieve full co-operation with the Hague Tribunal beforehand.
