“Serbia and Kosovo should join EU together”
Timothy Garton Ash believes the solution may lie in Serbia and Kosovo joining the EU simultaneously.

“Serbia and Kosovo should join EU together”
He added that “Kosovo should become the 33rd, and Serbia the 34th EU member, during a ceremony that should be held in Sarajevo, marking the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War.”Garton Ash also called on the EU to clearly demonstrate that Ahtisaari’s plan was the best solution available, although, in his words, not entirely just.
“It is not just that innocent old Serb women, whose only violent act has been to beat their cows with a stick, go in fear for their lives.”, Garton Ash wrote, adding that “Milošević, not the EU, lost Kosovo for Serbia”.
“Ahtisaari’s plan is a complicated, messy compromise, sure to leave everyone unhappy - which is the best one can hope for in the circumstances,” Garton Ash stressed and warned that the EU must adopt a united position on the plan, as “only thus will Russia be brought to agree”.
