Kosovo resolution on Parliament agenda

The Serbian Government adopted the Resolution yesterday saying that  "UN Envoy Ahtisaari’s plan breaches the fundamental principles of international law since it does not take into consideration the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Serbia in relation to Kosovo and that it illegally lays the foundations for the creation of an independent state on the territory of Serbia".

The Government recommended that the Serbian Parliament reject all aspects of Ahtisaari’s proposal which violate the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Serbia as an internationally recognized state.

Socialist Party member, Borka Vučić, is presiding over the first Parliamentary session, scheduled for today at noon, as the oldest deputy in the Parliament.

Serbian President and PM on Kosovo

Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Koštunica addressed the Parliament with words that “Kosovo issue bothers every generation of Serbian people, and is up to you [Parliament] to articulate the will and interests of our people”.

Koštunica criticized the manner in which UN Special Kosovo Envoy Martti Ahtisaari drafted his plan for Kosovo status settlement and the way he presented it to Belgrade. “Serbia has been served with a partition plan meant to change its internationally recognized borders against Serbia’s will. The international law has been breached and the will of Serbian people overlooked”, Koštunica argued.

“We will set out to Vienna to show that Serbia seeks a compromise. We have already offered Albanian ethnic majority in Kosovo the highest possible level of autonomy”, he said.

“Ahtisaari overstepped his mandate to allow the creation of another Albanian state. There is no valid argument to substantiate his deed”, Koštunica added while elaborating on the the resolution.

Serbian President Boris Tadić said that the Parliament, as the highest legislative body, needs to have its say on the Ahtisaari’s Kosovo status proposal. “Serbia has been consistent in its policy towards Kosovo from the start, advocating sovereignty and territorial integrity”.

“We offer Kosovo Albanians all that they already have - their own parliament within a civilized democratic state of Serbia, with a view to the restoration of the relations with Central Serbia”, Tadić said.

“Serbia should partake in the negotiations and reach a long-term compromise with the capacity to maintain regional stability”, Tadić concluded.
