“Internal independence is not on the table”

“I mentioned internal independence not as a model for Kosovo, but as a theoretical model substantiated by several examples we have in Europe”.

He added that he explained the concept of internal self-determination without linking the issue to Kosovo, and claimed that a country can enact the principle of self-government without involving secession, representing a theoretically legitimate model. “The plan prepared by the Serbian Government does not contain the concept of internal independence, but rather contains a plan for essential autonomy as a possible solution for Kosovo”, Samardžić added.

He estimated that nothing will happen in regards to Kosovo until the new government is formed, and that UN Special Envoy Martti Ahtisaari should have paid more attention to the timing.

“The international community boasted about allowing for a three-month delay to unveil the proposal, due to the pre-election campaign in Serbia, and they have now stabbed us in the back by deciding to prematurely disclose the proposal. Their attempt to blame it all on Serbian politicians comes as a lame excuse”, Samardžić concluded.
