Rupel: EU won’t insist on Mladić

After the session of the EU Foreign Ministers, Dimitrij Rupel assessed that the EU would probably continue the dialogue with Serbia regarding the finalizing of Stabilization and Association Agreement after the government is formed.

EU Foreign Ministers appealed to Serbian politicians last Monday to swiftly form the pro-European government willing to face challenges and constructively co-operate with the international community.

EU members have diverging views on the interpretation of the phrase “constructive co-operation”, as diplomatic sources in Brussels conveyed. Some members, including Slovenia, Italy and Greece, advocate that the EU should ease its grip on Serbia and take the condition of arresting Mladić off the table, Slovenian News Agency STA reported.

“Certain conditions should be left for the end of SAA talks, and not insist on them now at the very beginning”, said Rupel adding that the full co-operation with The Hague doesn’t entail ‘putting Mladić in chains’.

In a recent statement for B92, Balkan analyst Tim Judah also suggested the EU might shelve its request for Mladić’s extradition as a condition for resuming SAA talks with Serbia.
