European Commission denies allegations about Olli Rehn’s alleged inclinations to condition EU talks with Kosovo status.

EC rebuts Le Monde article

Sources in the European Commission add that principles and conditions in the stabilization and association process are the same for all EU aspirant countries, including Serbia, and thus bear no relation to Kosovo and its fate.

Le Monde also speculated that the EU tended to avoid crisis in relation to Serbia and Russia while waiting for Martti Ahtisaari to reveal his recommendations for the level of independence for Kosovo.

The French daily added that the EU was concerned about the Moscow-Belgrade alliance when it came to finalizing Kosovo's status, stating that Moscow could veto any proposal which allowed independence for Kosovo.

In relation to such speculations, the European Commission officials thus maintained that Rehn actually reminded that Russia should define its responsibility and contribute to finding a viable solution for Kosovo, including the adoption of a new UN resolution.
