EU will back Ahtisaari’s proposal

Although the next spring has been set as the deadline for determining Kosovo’s status, International Crisis Group analyst Alexander Anderson thinks a solution decision in the first half of 2007 would count for an achievement, given the UN Security Council dynamics, and the Russian stance.

Still, Anderson believes that the latest American initiative to continue with negotiations after Ahtisaari’s proposal has been unveiled may lead to a change in the Russian position.

“I think that what we can expect from Ahtisaari’s proposal is some form of independence, certainly containing a kind of supervised independence”, Anderson said.
