Ceku urges Valley Albanians to participate in vote

Kosovo's PM has urged Albanians in southern Serbia to participate in the upcoming Serbian elections.

In a meeting with leaders from the Preševo Valley, a region near the boundary the theprovince of Kosovo, Agim Ceku encouraged the local leadership to "use all democratic means to improve the situation and implement all the rights that belong to ethnic Albanians" in that area, a statement said.

The southern Serbia region was the scene of an ethnic Albanian insurgency in 2000-2001, which ended in a Western-brokered peace plan granting more rights to the restive minority.

The ethnic Albanians in the area have said they want to split the region from Serbia and unite it with neighboring Kosovo, also populated predominantly by ethnic Albanians.
