Fried: Tadić’s Bush letter significant

Adriatic Charter meeting gathered foreign policy chiefs of the Adriatic Initiative member countries, including Albania’s Besnik Mustafaj, Croatia’s Kolinda Grabar-Kitanović and Macedonia’s Antonio Milošoski.

The meeting was also attended by representatives of the states with the observer status, including Serbian assistant foreign minister Dejan Šahović, and Bosnian and Montenegrin foreign ministers Mladen Ivanić and Milan Roćen.

Fried told journalists that by inviting Serbia, Bosnia and Montenegro to join Partnership, NATO has made a step of trust and hope that the pro-Euro-Atlantic integrations forces in those countries will “know what to do”.

The U.S. and NATO will assist them in this, Fried said, and stressed that Serbia and Bosnia have a long way to go to achieve full cooperation with the Hague Tribunal, including the arrest of Ratko Mladić and Radovan Karadžić.

The U.S. assistant secretary of state reiterated Washington’s position that Kosovo status solution cannot be seen as a precedent, but must instead be viewed as a unique case, that cannot prejudice the outcome of other contentious issues in the Balkans and elsewhere.

Fried emphasized his country’s support for UN envoy Martti Ahtisaari’s efforts to reach the solution for the Kosovo status problem.

Earlier this week, the New York Times reported from Washington that president Tadić’s letter persuaded U.S. to accept Serbia’s bid to join NATO’s partnership program.

U.S. officials told the daily that they had dropped their opposition to a special Serbian partnership with NATO and possible future membership, after receiving an impassioned letter from President Boris Tadić offering assurances of his strong pro - Western sympathies.

The letter, which one official called "really compelling," provided important reassurances just as the international community was preparing to decide on the future of Kosovo, a decision in which Serbian cooperation could be crucial, the newspaper reported.

"We're taking a chance on pro-Western forces in Serbia and we're trying to strengthen them. We're also going to hold Tadić to his word”, Daniel Fried said at the time.
