Tadić: Choice is between Democrats and Radicals

“There is obviously a choice here: DS or SRS. These are the two opposed, battling policies”.

“I do not wish to see people in conflict, as that would lead Serbia back to the 1990’s. I want to see policies and political ideas battling so that voters get a clear idea about what they will choose”, Tadić said, adding that his party’s key election campaign topics will be standard of living and EU membership.

President Tadić said the Democrats represent Serbia’s strongest link to Europe, as well as that his party, confident and aware of its strength, will take part in the elections under its own name, sure about who it will never enter a coalition with.

According to him, the Democrats have several candidates for the post of the future prime minister.

“I will decide on the candidate myself, while his or her role will be to lead a state policy agreed upon in a democratic way, and see to their obligations each day”.

Tadić said the new government must avoid the mistake of being “a confederacy of portfolios” as is the case now, adding that to this end vital support must be gained from other parties, NGOs and individuals.

On Kosovo and Hague

Although the UN Kosovo envoy Martti Ahtisaari postponed revealing his status proposal for after the Serbian parliamentary elections, Boris Tadić does not believe this will influence their outcome significantly.

“The state negotiating team is pulling Kosovo out of independence, where those who led this country in the Nineties pushed it”, the Serbian president said.

Asked to comment on the pre-election implementation of the Action Plan designed to provide full cooperation with the Hague, Tadić said no government on its way out is likely to try and solve the most difficult issues, jeopardizing its election results.

“A future government will certainly solve the Hague cooperation issue, since without solving that problem Serbia has no future at all”, Boris Tadić concluded.
