Leigh: Serbia’s turn to act

B92: What do you consider to be a constructive approach?

Leigh: I think what we wish to see accepted and supported is a need to reach a positive outcome. A sign of this positive approach would be, for instance, Belgrade encouraging Kosovo Serbs to participate in the interim government’s institutions.

B92: The new constitution starts with the preamble defining Kosovo as an integral part of Serbia. How do you see this?

Leigh: International community’s position on this is clear. Kosovo’s status is defined by UN Security Council resolution 1244. Serbia is expected to base its position on this fact.

B92: There were indications that the EU will, as a goodwill gesture, allow for the stabilization and association talks to continue even before Mladić’s arrest?

Leigh: We welcome the fact the Serbian government has adopted its Action Plan for the full Hague cooperation. I spoke with my hosts today about what Serbia plans to do to, even under current political circumstances, continue to implement this plan. The ball is now in Serbia’s yard. Any progress will be noted in Brussels.
