The Serbian government will thus lose three ministers and one deputy prime minister. The prime minister now has two weeks to propose new candidates for the posts.

NBS requests a change in the appointment of governors

The National bank of Serbia (NBS) has suggested a change of Article 5 of the Constitutional Law, which stipulates that the new parliament will during its first session after a new cabinet is elected appoint a new NBS governor. NBS has reportedly requested the removal of the article in question.

NBS representatives say they “cannot see any reason to, out of all other state officials, have precisely the new governor appointed during the new parliament’s first session.”

They go on to say that it is “unclear why such a solution would seek to destabilize one of the state’s rare stable institutions from the very first session.”

The National Bank representatives remind that theirs is an independent financial institution that “neither requests nor receives instructions from other state organs, and answers only to the parliament.”

The unnamed NBS officials said they would submit their proposed amendment to the Constitutional Law to the Serbian president, prime minister, parliament speaker and all party groups, which are authorized by law to put the amendment in the parliamentary procedure.
