Traveling to Bulgaria in 2007

Bulgarian Ambassador to Serbia Georgi Dimitrov said that there will be no administrative problems in entering Bulgaria, adding that those who have been traveling from Serbia to Sofia and other Bulgarian cities can continue to do so without any serious problems.

Dimitrov said that Bulgaria, as a new member of the EU, will have to introduce visas for Serbia citizens, though they will be free of charge and valid for  longer periods of time. Students, artists and tourists will receive special travel privileges.

Many Serbian citizens living near the border with Bulgaria received Bulgarian passports this year, Dimitrov also noted.

Many people on both sides of the border depend on constant travel between the two countries and small-time smuggling of merchandise and products. Once Bulgarian enters the EU, tobacco products will be significantly more expensive, so those who used to smuggle cigarettes from Bulgaria to Serbia will now be working the other way around.

According to statistics of border control officials, about 4,000 to 5,000 boxes of cigarettes are confiscated monthly. Also, many Bulgarian citizens live off the sale of various textile products on the streets of Pirot and Dimitrograd on the Serbian side of the border.
