Italy supports continuation of talks

D’Alema, who brought up the question of the EU’s relations with Serbia in Luxembourg this week, will ask for the discussions for the Stabilization and Association Agreement to be continued with Belgrade, according to daily Večernje Novosti, adding that Italy will not give up on insisting that the EU opens up to Serbia more.

He added that, if the report of the EU Ministerial Council is read diligently, it can be seen that the arrest of Mladić is not a condition for the continuation of the discussions, rather “completing full cooperation with the Hague Tribunal.”

Speaking of the Kosovo status discussions, D’Alema said that the impression of the international community is that Kosovo is headed towards independence.

“It looks as if this is unavoidable, because this is the will of the majority population in Kosovo. This will be a great blow to Serbia, and we, I mean the entire EU, will have to give maximum help and support to Serbia in order for it to survive the counter-blow.” D’Alema said.
