“We are ready to fight poverty and corruption, since our principal problems aren’t Kosovo and the Hague, but rather the 800,000 poor people living in Serbia today”, Tadić said.

“These elections are necessary in order to clear up the political situation in the country and get a better government”, Tadić said, adding that the forthcoming elections were therefore in Serbia’s national interest.

The DS presidency member Bojan Pajtić believes the new constitution is much better than the previous one adopted during the Milošević regime, and finds it strange to hear the democratically oriented parties calling for a constitutional referendum boycott.

Pajtić reiterated that the Democrats are ready to cooperate with everyone except the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) and the Serb Radical Party (SRS).

“The Liberal-Democrats (LDP) and other democratic bloc parties are not our enemies and we are unable to see enemies in those who swear our future must be European”, he said.

The Senior Council also discussed the forthcoming elections and possible coalitions, but that part of the meeting was closed to the press.

Today’s meeting will be the third the DS has decided to organize outside of Belgrade.
