Mandates for visa facilitation

Serbian EU Association office chief Tanja Miščević told B92 that the Commission’s proposal contains specifics on the categories to which the new visa policy will apply. However, she explains this in only the beginning of the adoption procedure of the mandate. “The Commission sends its proposal to the Council of Ministers, which then deliberates the proposal. After that, it is the Council that reaches a decision to open the mandate negotiations which take place according to the Commission’s procedures”, Tanja Miščević said.

Tanja Miščević added that readmission negotiations will take place parallel with the said visa facilitation negotiations. “Suggestions are on the table that the categories should include high school students, journalists, non-governmental sector workers, and members of the families of persons legally employed in the EU. We have not had a negative answer to this so far, but we will only be able to assess the true EC stand once the negotiations start”, she said.

Olli Rehn, the EU enlargement commissioner said that visa policy facilitation was very important to ordinary citizens, for travel, studies, and doing business in the EU.
