This area is inhabited by Serbs. The meeting at the NATO HQ in Brussels on Friday afternoon took place in the presence of EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton.

The reports from Brussels specified that the KSF will be able to go to northern Kosovo "only in case of natural disasters, and will require agreement for this from NATO and the local Serb community."

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said that the western military alliance "will do everything in order for the agreement between Belgrade and Priština to be implemented," and added he hoped it would be reached.

It was announced earlier in the day that Belgrade and Priština had initialed an agreement.
