BELGRADE United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has confirmed his participation in a public debate on the operation of the international criminal tribunals. The debate is due to take place in the UN General Assembly on April 10. UN chief to take part in debate on war crimes tribunals Tanjug said it learned this from the office of the UNGA chairman. According to this, Ban Ki-moon will address the participants at the start of the meeting, along with UNGA President Vuk Jeremic. Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic will be among those who will address the gathering. Jeremic recently stated that from the very start pressure has been exerted because of the decision to put the topic of the international criminal justice on the agenda of the UNGA public discussions. On the occasion, he announced that a great number of the UN member states will partake in the meeting. The Washington-based magazine Foreign Policy recently pointed to the pressures, stressing that a part of the international community is against the debate. Although they have originally accepted to partake in the debate, the president of the Assembly of States Parties for the International Criminal Court, Tina Intelmann, and the executive director of Human Rights Watch, Kenneth Roth, later cancelled their participation. The office of the UNGA president said that the final list of participants in the public debate will be released 24 hours before the event. Vuk Jeremic decided to schedule the debate last year in the wake of the acquittal of former Croatian generals, Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markac. The Hague Tribunal found them both guilty of war crimes against Serbs and sentenced them to over 20 years in prison each in the original verdict, but acquitted them on appeal. Tanjug
