BRUSSELS European Parliament (EP) Rapporteur Tanja Fajon has said that negotiations about a mechanism for the suspension of the visa-free regime are still underway. She added that an agreement would not be reached easily. “Still no agreement on suspension of visa-free regime” “The negotiations about the suspension mechanism are still underway. I think we will not reach an agreement quickly,” Fajon said, Anadolu news agency has reported. Representatives of the European Council, European Commission (EC) and the EP failed to agree on the mechanism for the suspension of the visa-free regime for the Western Balkan countries on December 18, 2012. It was speculated in January that the EP’s Committee on Civil Liberties (LIBE) would decide on the introduction of the safety mechanism which means that the visa-free regime for the Western Balkan countries could be temporarily suspended if the proposal was adopted by the EP. Fajon warned that the Western Balkan countries should nonetheless keep working in order to prevent visas from being reintroduced. “Regardless, it is necessary to take measures and do everything to reduce the number of asylum seekers,” she explained.
