BRUSSELS, BELGRADE EU High Commissioner for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton has invited the Serbian and Kosovo presidents to a meeting on February 6. “The meeting will be held as a part of the normalization of relations between the two sides,” Ashton’s Spokeswoman Maja Kocijancic said in an official release. EU’s Ashton sends official invitation to Nikolic, Jahjaga Media have been speculating about a possible date for the meeting for several days and Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic confirmed on Friday that the meeting would be held on February 6. Tanjug has learnt from well-informed sources that concrete agreements are not expected to be reached at the meeting and that its goal is to symbolically back the ongoing dialogue. “The meeting will remove all doubts that there is a disagreement regarding the dialogue between the Serbian president and prime minister,” a European Commission (EC) high-ranking official who wished to stay anonymous explained and pointed to a debate on the Platform and Resolution on Kosovo that had been adopted by the Serbian parliament last month. The first version of the Platform, proposed by Nikolic contained a formulation that “nothing is agreed until everything is agreed” that could be interpreted as an announcement of suspension of the dialogue until the issue of Kosovo’s final status was resolved. The sentence in question was removed from the final version of the document after PM Ivica Dacic’s intervention. Brussels believes that the meeting between Nikolic and Kosovo President Atifete Jahjaga is another important step in the normalization of relations between Belgrade and Pristina and it would certainly be mentioned in a report on Serbia's progress that the EC should submit to the European Council in the beginning of April. The Council will probably in June decide whether Serbia will get a date for the beginning of the EU accession talks. Catherine Ashton (Beta/AP, file) Tanjug
