BELGRADE Serbian and Bulgarian PMs Ivica Dacic and Boyko Borisov signed a EUR 120 million contract for the construction of a gas pipeline. The deal was signed in Brussels on Friday. Serbia and Bulgaria ink EU-funded pipeline deal The funds for the construction of the 180 km-long pipeline between Serbia and Bulgaria with the capacity of 1.8 billion cubic meters per year will be secured from EU funds. The goal of this project, it has been announced, is "to avoid the 2009 crisis, when big parts of Southeast Europe, including Bulgaria and Serbia, were hit by suspension of gas supply". EU Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger attended the signing ceremony. Dacic stated that he was "satisfied that the agreement came immediately after the opinion of the Council of Europe allowing Serbia to begin accession talks by the end of June". "As the pipeline nears completion so will Serbia be closer to the EU," according to Dacic. "I am glad to be here today. This is one of my nicer days in Brussels, because we are discussing subjects that should be the main topics of Serbia's EU integration, development projects," he noted. According to Dacic, Serbia and Bulgaria are some of the rare countries with a developed gas market, and yet Serbia has only one supply line, through Hungary. This project will benefit Serbia's south and help develop infrastructure there, he pointed out. "In case of an accident or interruption in the supply from Hungary, Serbia will have a reserve supply line," Dacic stressed. "Serbia will chair the Energy Community next year and this is a good introduction to that," he believes. Dacic is willing to support Serbia completely in chairing that organization, explaining that it is because energy is one of the fields where Serbia could make significant progress. "The construction of this pipeline will be another reason for the best possible relations with Bulgaria. I expect Borisov to visit Belgrade in February," he said. According to earlier announcements, while in Brussels, Dacic will also meet with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton.
