BERLIN The number of Serbian citizens seeking asylum in Germany almost doubled in October when compared to September. This was announced by the German Federal Ministry of the Interior. Serbian citizens top list of asylum seekers in Germany According to the ministry's data, a total of 2,673 Serbian citizens applied for asylum in Germany in October, 1,395 in September and 496 in August. Macedonia is the second by the number of asylum requests (1,351), Syria had 879, Afghanistan 695 and Bosnia-Herzegovina 630. The total number of asylum application in Germany in October 2012 increased from September's 6,691 to 9,950. This means that more than half of the people who sought asylum in October come from Serbia, Macedonia, BiH and Kosovo, and no one of them is among the 505 people who received the refugee status in Germany in October. In the period from January to October 2012, a total of 50,344 persons applied for asylum in Germany, which is an increase of 37 percent when compared to the same period last year. The German ministry's data show that in the first ten months of 2012, most of the requests came from Serbia - 6,829, Afghanistan - 6,096, Syria, Iraq and Macedonia. The rising number of asylum seekers from some Balkan countries, Serbia included, sparked demands from a number of EU countries to reconsider the visa-free regime granted them by the union.
