Serbia's Jeremić is new UN General Assembly president

The United Nations General Assembly on Friday in New York elected Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic as its new president. Of the 193 UN member-states, 190 voted, while 185 ballots were valid. Jeremic received the support of 99 countries, with one country abstaining. Serbia's Jeremic is new UN General Assembly president Jeremic was running against Lithuanian Ambassador to the UN Dalius Cekuolis. It was reported earlier in the day that the voting at the plenary session would be secret. The winner will head the UNGA for the next year on behalf of 23 countries of the Eastern European Group. Diplomatic sources claimed that certain countries that support Cekuolis, including Germany and the U.S., had "increased pressure in the past several weeks". However, Jeremic had a slight advantage, the diplomats said. Former Yugoslav Ambassador to the UN Vladislav Jovanovic believes that Jeremic's success is a significant recognition to Serbia. The last time the UNGA president was chosen in this way was in 1991 when the Asia-Pacific group did not reach an agreement on a joint candidate. Jeremic is a third UNGA president from the former Yugoslavia region, after Yugoslav diplomat Lazar Mojsov in 1977 and Macedonian diplomat Srgjan Kerim in 2007.
