Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) Patriarch Irinej has stated that Serbia belongs in the EU but that it should not be asked to renounce Kosovo. “We support and respect the wish to join the European Union because we really belong there. We appreciate the invitation but not the way they are conditioning it,” he told daily Alo. Patriarch: Join EU without giving up on Kosovo He stressed that Serbia should not renounce Kosovo in order to join the EU. “Therefore, if we need to renounce Kosovo in order to join Europe, thanks, but we will in that case continue living with our poor people the best we can,” the patriarch explained. He stressed that Serbia should not renounce Kosovo in order to join the EU.

“Therefore, if we need to renounce Kosovo in order to join Europe, thanks, but we will in that case continue living with our poor people the best we can,” the patriarch explained.

He told Kosovo Serbs to stay united and to peacefully fight for their rights because it was the only way to stay and survive in the southern Serbian province.
