KFOR spokesman Uwe Nowitzki said on Friday that KFOR's main task is to remove the blocks from the roads near Brnjak so that its units can move freely". The removal today of one barricade near Brnjak - that Serbs replaced with another - was planned by the NATO troops "in close coordination and cooperation with certain Serbian state institutions", this spokesman further asserted. KFOR claims it "planned removal with Serbia" The claim has in the meantime been rejected as false by the government negotiator in the Kosovo dialogue Borislav Stefanovic. "The main thing today is to remove the barricade at Gate 31 (Brnjak) in order to have freedom of movement to and from central Serbia," Nowitzki said, according to Tanjug. KFOR's activities today came after local Serbs last week opened one lane on the blocked roads in the north for the passage of its troops. But KFOR rejected the possibility to the roads in this way, as EU mission, EULEX, was not also included in the deal. Asked today if KFOR will continue removing barricades, Nowitzki again said it is the position of the military mission that, unless Serbs take down the barricades themselves, KFOR has the right to use its own means to take them down. He said the situation in northern Kosovo is peaceful and KFOR is "pretty satisfied" with today's operation. "On the other hand, it is a little surprising that people have built a new block only five to ten meters from the one we are removing. The new one is in central Serbia, so it is now a matter for the state of Serbia," Nowitzki said. Asked if this means KFOR will not take down the new road block, Nowitzki responded that they "cannot, because we would be in the territory of central Serbia, which is, as you know, impossible for us". Asked if tear gas was used Friday morning, Nowitzki said he got confirmation from the KFOR command that pepper spray was used. Nowitzki said the removal of the barricade at Gate 31 was planned and organized in close coordination and cooperation with "certain Serbian state institutions", but would not "mention names": "This was done to ensure freedom of movement to and from Serbia. I cannot mention names, but, as you know, KFOR is in regular contact with official Serbian institutions which deal with Kosovo," Nowitzki said. He said "Serbian police came to the crossing at several points to observe the situation", and according to Tanjug news agency, the spokesman was "surprised they did not try to quell the protesters".
