Russia's Emergency Situations Minister Sergei Shoigu dismissed speculations that the Russian-Serbian humanitarian center in Nis is actually Russia's spy base. The minister stressed that it was "a fire-fighting humanitarian center". South Serbia center "not military base" "he humanitarian center which has recently opened in Nis is a regular air base. In case of fire, the aircraft stationed there will operate so as to tackle one of the most frequent natural disasters in this area. The base will serve humanitarian purpose only. In this way, we will try to offer necessary assistance to people who need help, since we receive numerous appeals for help from entire Europe," Shoigu said in an interview for the Belgrade-based Press tabloid. Commenting on speculations that the center is actually Russia's military base, Shoigu said that the center was open to all, so everyone can come and see that their doubts are not reasonable. Recalling the remark of Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic that "someone seems to want this to be a military base", Shoigu said that they "must be disappointed, since this is only a humanitarian center". Shoigu refused to comment on the speculation that the base "might be a center for espionage", but said: "The humanitarian center in Nis will offer assistance to the entire Balkans. If someone deems us spies, then we are the spies who are helping people and doing our best to save them." He confirmed that he discussed the issue of Kosovo and Metohija with Serbian officials, and added that as regards Kosovo, Russia has demonstrated its support to Serbia, and that its stand regarding the matter remains firm. Our stand remains the same, we support Serbia, Shoigu emphasized. Shoigu is seen in Nis last week, flanked by Serbian ministers Dacic and Jeremic (Beta)
