FM Vuk Jeremic stated on Monday that there was "no doubt as to the strategic relevance" of the opening in Nis of a joint Russian and Serbian emergencies center. The administrative office of the Regional Humanitarian Center in Nis, southern Serbia, was opened today in the presence of Russian Emergency Situations Minister Sergei Shoigu, Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic, Russian Ambassador to Serbia Aleksandr Konuzin, and Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic. FM: Russo-Serbian center "not military base" "Humanitarian centers such as this one are important in all parts of the world when it comes to eliminating the consequences of natural disasters and no negative connotation should be attached to this, because this is an open project and is not aimed against anyone," Jeremic said and added that the facility would function exclusively as a humanitarian center and not a military base. Foreign military bases, he added, are located in other parts of the territory of Serbia, while the one in Nis is there "with the consent of the Serbian government". "In the time to come, Nis would become a place to monitor events and alleviate consequences of natural disasters in the entire Balkans, the minister stated and added that this would contribute to making the whole region a safer place. He said that all Serbia's neighbors are welcome to join in the project and expressed expectation that they would do so. The minister recalled that this is the first center of the kind to open in Europe. The fact that Serbia and Nis were chosen as the seat of the center reflects the total value of the relations between Serbia and Russia, Jeremic noted. "Russia undeniably has enormous experience in this area, as was made obvious in alleviating the consequences of natural disasters in the territory," Jeremic said and added that the two countries' cooperation will continue. Ivica Dacic and Sergei Shoigu earlier in the day signed the documents related to the constitution of a regional humanitarian center for emergency management. The signed documents comprise plans regarding joint actions in deployment and first stage of development of the center in Nis and the protocol on transfer and usage of the Russian part of the center's material resources.
